GameDifferences aims to be a minimal, straightforward source of information to help gamers determine the differences between versions of a particular game. There are generally two types of situation where it is necessary to determine the differences between game versions.
First, many games are released cross-platform, on several systems simultaneously. However, the versions often have subtle (or sometimes even major) differences in performance, content, or other aspects. It can be difficult for someone that owns multiple gaming systems to determine which version is best for them to purchase. For example, Portal 2 was released on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac. Which version should someone with access to all four systems purchase?
Many games are also re-released separate from their initial launch, in "enhanced" versions and/or often on a different system than they were originally released on. Someone coming to the game after a re-release may be curious which version is considered best, and gamers that played the original version may wonder whether a new re-release contains enough changes to make it worth playing through the game again. An example of this case is Chrono Trigger, which was released on the Playstation six years after its initial release, and again on the DS seven years after that.
